It is our goal to be the health care provider of choice to our community. To help you feel confident in the care you receive at Fenway, in this section we describe our efforts to ensure we provide you with high quality, safe, effective care.

Adhering to National Standards for Quality & Safety

Fenway Health is accredited by the Joint Commission, an independent, non-profit, organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,000 health care organizations in the U.S.  Fenway meets the Joint Commission’s nationally recognized standards for safety and quality.

Fenway Health and Fenway South End are also recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH). In the PCMH model, we use a team-based approach to deliver comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered, evidence based care.

Once again in 2018, Fenway Health is proud to have been named an LGBT Healthcare Equality Leader in the HRC’s annual Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Leader status is awarded to healthcare facilities that attained a score of 100 in the HEI. This status is a reflection of Fenway’s commitment to providing culturally competent healthcare of the highest quality to everyone who walks through our doors.

Providing Evidence-Based Preventive and Chronic Disease Care

In 2016, Fenway South End became the first practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to be certified by the Health Policy Commission as a PCMH-PRIME practice. The PCMH-PRIME certification recognizes efforts Fenway has taken to provide whole person care, by integrating Behavioral Health care within the Primary Care setting. Today, both Fenway South End and Fenway Health on Boylston Street are certified PCMH-PRIME practices.


In 2018, Fenway Health was recognized by HRSA with Quality Awards described below. These awards are based on 2017 performance. As a Federally Qualified Community Health Center, Fenway Health reports Quality Performance data to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) annually.  In an effort to further their commitment to improving quality, efficiency, and value of health care services delivered at health centers across the country, HRSA provides Quality Improvement Awards.  These awards recognize the highest performing health centers nationwide as well as those centers that have made significant quality improvement gains from the previous year.

– National Quality Leader – as one of 36 health centers having exceeded national clinical quality benchmarks, including Healthy People 2020 goals, for chronic disease management, preventive care, or perinatal/prenatal care.

– Health Center Quality Leader – as one of 411 health centers having placed among the top 30 percent of all HRSA-support health centers to achieve the best overall clinical performance for clinical quality measures, demonstrating high-quality across their clinical operations.

– Enhancing Access to Care – having increased the total number of patients served and the number of patients receiving comprehensive services between 2016 and 2017.

– Electronic Health Record (EHR) Reporters Recognition – employed EHRs to report on all clinical quality measures (CQM) data for all patients.

–  Addressing Health Disparities – having met or exceeded Healthy People 2020 goals by each race/ethnic group, or made marked advances in moving each race/ethnic group towards the Healthy People 2020 goals.

–  Advancing Health Information Technology (HIT) for Quality Award — having utilized HIT systems to increase access to care and advance quality of care.

In 2018, Fenway Health was recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for our work around patient blood pressure(BP) and cholesterol control. We received the AHA’s Target: BP Gold achievement level and the Check Change Control Cholesterol Participant achievement level, with our data showing a 70 percent or greater blood pressure control rate throughout our adult patient population.

Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care

Through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, Fenway provides comprehensive primary care to people living with HIV, regardless of their ability to pay. HIV care is integrated with Primary Care services to make sure all patients receive the same level of care coordination and support.

83.9% of patients have HIV viral loads that are suppressed below 200 copies/mL . This test measures the number of HIV particles in the blood. Viral loads below 200 indicate that the virus is not actively replicating and the risk of disease progression is low.

82.1% of patients have a CD4 count above 200 cells/mm. CD4 counts measure the amount of cells that fight infection, they are also known as T-helper cells. Keeping cell counts high reduces the patient’s risk of complications due to HIV.

100% of patients served have received HIV Risk-Reduction Screening and Counseling.

100% of patients who were first diagnosed with HIV by health center staff during the year had a routine medical visit within 3 months of diagnosis.

Understanding Your Experience

We survey patients about their experience at Fenway using Press Ganey.  Patients may receive a survey by email after a visit with one of our Medical providers.  We use this information to understand the care experience from our patient’s perspective and to find ways we can improve. The table below includes recent data on patient experiences reported from this survey.
