Petition: Help Protect Those Experiencing Homelessness From COVID-19

To our Fenway Health community,

The COVID-19 outbreak is a public health crisis that is bringing the needs of our most vulnerable community members – the people we pledge to serve at Fenway Health – into even sharper focus. Members of the Fenway Health low-threshold behavioral health and Access Drug User Health teams have drafted a petition drawing attention to an emerging critical need: housing for those who are experiencing homelessness. I am writing to invite you to lend your voice to this effort.

There are more than 6,200 people experiencing homelessness in Boston alone. With forty percent of adults experiencing homelessness expected to become sick with COVID-19 before the virus peaks, we are urging bold steps to ensure safe accommodations for all who are at risk of infection. The petition asks that Boston and Massachusetts leaders continue to make progress to make vacant hotels, dorms and other forms of non-congregate housing available.

Please take a look here at this well-researched and thoughtful petition. I am inviting you to consider adding your name in support, and sharing it with your networks as well.

Our mission includes advocating for the most vulnerable in our community. I am proud to stand with all of you as we urge our leaders to ensure there is housing for those who need it. This advances public health, and – perhaps more importantly – allows us to stand with and for our fellow community members who deserve safety and compassion during these times and always.

Thank you and take good care,

Ellen LaPointe, CEO
